Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Bear Valley Lodge located?
Bear Valley is located in the Northwest corner of Prince of Wales Island - seventy-five air miles from Ketchikan.

How do I get there?
Most people fly into Ketchikan from Seattle via Alaska Airlines.  From Ketchikan we arrange your float plane ride to the lodge.  (Ground transportation is also possible.)

Do you know any hotels in Ketchikan?
We recommend the Best Western the Landings Hotel in Ketchikan ( ph 907/225-5166 or 800/428-8304 or www.landinghotel.com), but there
are several hotels and bed and breakfasts from which to choose.  Please see our Travel Planner page for ideas.

How long are your trips?
Our trips are 3, 4, 7, and 14 days

What clothes will I need?
The weather in Alaska is changeable but pleasant. Expect temperatures from 50 to 70 degrees and occasional showers.  We also experience periods of rain.  If you pack warm comfortable layers, you should be ready for anything.  Pack sturdy shoes, if you plan to hike and explore and a light water repellent jacket.  Rain gear is provided, but bring short rubber boots if you have them.
*please see our page "What to Bring' for more info.

What kind of fish will I catch?
You will fish for all 5 species of salmon, halibut, lingcod, steelhead, cutthroat trout and at least a dozen species of rock fish.  Guests are encouraged to try thier hand with the crew in crabbing and shrimping.

How many guests do you have at one time?
We usually plan for twelve guests per week.
Please call if you have a larger group and we
will try to accomodate you.

How do I get my fish home?
Bear Valleys dockhands will vacuum pack, freeze, and pack your fish in airline-approved Wet-lok boxes for your flight.

Can I go crabbing and clamming?
Yes, please join the crew and have some fun
learning how they do it on the "Deadliest Catch".

What kind of gear do you use?
Bear Valley uses only the best gear.  We buy new fishing tackle each season for you to use and stress the use of light and ultra light tackle.  Its easy to use and more fun than you can imagine!

Do I need a fishing license?  Where do I get one?
If you are not an Alaskan resident and over the
age of 16 you will need to purchase a fishing license (and King stamp when fishing for Kings).  Purchase them at the lodge, on the Internet, or at many Alaska retail stores.

What about alcohol?
We serve wine with dinner.  If you would like your favorite cocktail or beer, please note you will need to bring it with you.  Let us know what mixers you prefer and we will have them ready.

Are the bears tame?
No!  They just look like Yogi and Booboo. Please consider all bears to be wild and armed and dangerous.

What kind of food do you serve?
Our trained professional chef serves you delicious gourmet meals of seafood, meat and pasta.  Our food is the freshest available and includes many salads, fruits and vegetables.  Every morning a hot breakfast is served and a box lunch is packed for you.

Do you take children?
Yes, we love children and think the best thing for them is to be out fishing.

Do you take credit cards?
We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

Do you take a deposit?
Yes.  For reservations out more than 9 months, we take only a 10% deposit.  All other reservations require a 50% deposit, balance due 90 days prior to your trip.

What is your cancellation policy?
If for some reason it becomes necessary for you to cancel your trip, we will happily apply your deposit toward a future trip.
