 Bear Valley Lodge Activities

Crabbing, Shrimping and Clamming
Dig for clams or crab for dungeness crab and spot prawns.  We love to show you the ropes and love even more to show you how really fresh seafood tastes! Enjoy spending time with the crew and harvest some of Alaska’s natural bounty.

Kayaking
Some of the most phenomenal kayaking in the world is right outside your door.  Get a little exercise and see the world - the Supernatural World. Hop in one of the sea kayaks and paddle into the quiet wilderness - see the otters, watch some whales or just enjoy the quiet of Wild Alaska!

Bear Watching
Bears are everywhere. Prince of Wales Island is said to be home to 120,000 black bears and one of the best bear observatories on the island is a short walk from the lodge.  Every summer black bears frequent  El Capitan Creek to feed on the abundant salmon that spawn in the river. Some groups spend all day fishing and feasting and provide
hours of entertainment.

Whales, Orcas, Sea Lions and Other Wildlife Watching and Photography
Southeast Alaska is home to over 700 Humpback whales during their summer migration. These graceful mammals magically appear, and it's common to see a dozen or more whales feeding, casually migrating, or taking a nap. You'll never forget the early morning sound of whales blowing across the flat calm waters; or snap the photo of a lifetime- the astounding spectacle of a 40-ton leviathan breaching!

Pods of orcas frequently pass by offering more exciting photo opportunities and endangered Stellar sea lions gather in haul-outs by the hundreds. Watch them play and listen to their boisterous banter.
Enjoy the show!

Tons of sea otters inhabit the area around the lodge and can often be seen swimming and cracking crab.  They make adorable photos as do all the feathered and furry creatures found around the lodge - eagles, dals porpoise, wolves, sitka deer, mink, martens, moose, seals, and more.

Remember your camera batteries; you don't want to miss a shot.

 Spelunking  (Caving)
A ten minute walk south of the lodge takes you to El Capitan Cave.  El Capitan is the largest mapped cave in Alaska.  It is also the first cave in Alaska where fossil bones were found.  An exquisite specimen of a female bear over 10,000 years old was excavated along with older partial bear skeletons and skulls.  El Cap also features the deepest limestone pit in the United States.  Tours are available.

 Hiking

Bring your hiking boots and explore the area.  There are thousands of acres of USFS land adjacent to the lodge with breathtaking scenery and all the flora and fauna of our temperate rainforest climate.
 Discover a silent pristine world!

Fishing
In addition to our fully guided fishing, spend as
much of your free time as you wish “scratching that fishing itch.”

Want to try your hand at some light spinning or fly fishing?
We are happy to arrange it.
